Biography of Gustav Bauernfeind

1848 born August 4th in Sulz/Neckar Germany
? studied architecture at Polytech Institute in Stuttgart and worked at the architectural firm of Professor Wilhelm Bäumer and later of Adolph Gnauth were he was introduced to painting.
1864 Castel Gandolfo am Albaner See, 1864 drawing on paper
1873-74 As an employee of Gnauth he traveled to Italy and was assigned to a project for Johann Christoph Engelhaus.

  • 1880 traveled for the 1st time from Munich to Egypt, Syria, and Palestine. He was having difficulty in selling his German bourgeois village scenes and took the advise of friends to change the style of his paintings in accordance with the contemporary Orientalist genre.
    1884 traveled to Beirut, Damascus and Jaffa where he met his future wife Elise Bertsch.

  • 1888 Bauernfeind left Germany for a third trip to the Middle East - the most extensively documented period of his life - and arrived in Jaffa. With over a week's delay due to severe flooding he finally boarded an Egyptian steamboat Fayiem that took him north to Beirut from where he continued inland toward Damascus

  • Gustav Bauernfeind's work consists of architectural and grenre pictures of Palestine motives. He has also painted numerous watercolors.
